U Drive Car Trailer Training B+E

U Drive now offers car trailer training for those people who passed their driving test on or after 1st January 1997 and need to obtain their B+E trailer entitlement on their license, to legally tow above 750kg (The 750KG is weight of trailer + weight of items in trailer)

For those people who passed their driving test before January 1997, U drive can offer training skills to tow, hitch and unhitch safely as well as improving your driving skill whilst towing.

Passed your driving test between on the 1st January 1934 too 31st December 1997 this is know as the grandad license.

You be pleased to know you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you’re generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to a maximum of 8,250kg mass, also referred to as Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM).

Passed your car test and have not yet passed B+E trailer test between: 1^st January 1997 - 17th January 2013

You are allowed to drive motor vehicles with no more than eight seats, with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg.  You are also allowed to tow a trailer up to 750kgs (the 750kg includes weight of trailer plus wiiegh of items in trailer) but remember the weight of car and trailer including haulage is not allowed to exceed 3,500kg

Passed your car test and passed your B+E trailer test between 1st January 1997 - 19th January 2013

You are allowed to drive a motor vehicle with no more than eight seats with a trailer aslong as you combination weight of car + trailer + items inside car and trailer doesnt exceed 7,500kg. 

REMEMBER your vehicle has a maximum towing weight. Please contact your vehicle manufactor to cehck the weight you are allowed to tow. 

Passed your car test and have NOT passed your B+E trailer test on and after 19th January 2013

You are allowed to drive motor vehicles with no more than eight seats, with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg.  You are also allowed to tow a trailer up to 750kgs (the 750kg includes weight of trailer plus wiiegh of items in trailer) but remember the weight of car and trailer including haulage is not allowed to exceed 3,500kg

Passed your Driving test and Also passed your B96 (new category) test on or after 19th January 2013

You are allowed to drive a  motor vehicle with no more than eight seats, tow a trailer more than 750kg alsong as the total weight of car + trailer +load is more than 3,000kg but the maximum mass car+trailer+items in trailer is not above 4,250kg.

Passed your Driving test and also passed your B+E trailer test on or after 19th January 2013

You are allowed to Drive a motor vehicle with no more than eight seats tow a trailer up to 3,500kg and the total weight of car + trailer + load doesnt exceed 7,000kg

If you want to tow a trailer more than 3,500kg with a car or small vehicle you need to do the C1E category which gives you a combined maximum weight of 12,000kg

Other considerations

When towing a trailer up to a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of 750kgs. You must ensure the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the un-laden weight of the car being used to tow that trailer; Trailers are often shared between different vehicles.

If you want to tow a caravan or trailer + haulage that exceeds the above 750kgs weight restrictions you are required to pass an additional driving test to add section B+E to your current driving licence.

What do I need to do, to pass the B+E driving test.

Firstly make sure you choose U Drive...

The B+E test last around 75 minutes and you will undertake the following procedures:

• Safety checks, making sure you are knowledgeable regarding the road worthiness of your trailer and car.
• Reversing: showing the examiner that you have control and the observation skills to reverse the trailer safely into a conned off area.
• A Controlled stop
• Driving with the trailer: Showing the examiner you have the skills and knowledge of how to tow a trailer in all types of road conditions, dual carriageways to urban and rural roads encompassing steep hills.
• Coupling and un-coupling: showing the skills required when taking the trailer off and re-attaching it ensuring safety checks take place to ensure it will  not  breakaway when being towed
